Gorillaz – Stylo (ft. Mos Def and Bobby Womack)

May 1, 2013 1 Comment

You may have heard of the Gorillaz before, but have you ever heard this song? It features Mos Def, which makes it instantly awesome already. Love me some Mos Def. If you ever want to feel really cool, all you have to do is listen to this song. The moving bass line is the real star of this song with its modern funk sound. Like the music video accurately depicts, this song is perfect for going on a chill road trip, the kind where you don’t talk and you just watch the scenery pass as you listen to awesome music. If it’s good enough for Bruce Willis then it’s certainly more than good enough for you.

Benji Hughes – Where Do Old Lovers Go?

April 4, 2013

Shout-out to my friend Theron who introduced this song to me. He randomly found it on Pandora one day and shared it with me. I don’t know if he looked more into Benji Hughes or not, but I did and I’m certainly glad! According to his bio on his record company’s site, Benji “loves beer but he loves women even more. Underneath his thick mane of strawberry blond hair and beard is a versatile singer/songwriter, full of heart.” What a charmer.

This is from his first album “A Love Extreme,” a 2-disc giant released back in 2008 at age 33. I think the whole album has a great sound for being 5 years old, and back in February it was announced that he’ll be releasing more albums this year. Hooray! He’s got a unique, laid-back, almost psychedelic 60s sound, and I saw one person compare him to Beck. He “sings” with a low, drawling voice in this song which creates the wistful feeling of the song. If you ever find yourself wondering about past relationships, don’t worry–you’re not the only one.

Also, don’t forget about the ticket giveaway this month!

The Sound of Arrows – Conquest

March 29, 2013

Introducing The Sound of Arrows, a Swedish electronic duo that has remixed for a lot of other well-known artists and produces their own synthpop and–here’s a new genre for you–dream pop music. Although the genre really isn’t that new, I’ll admit I didn’t know of its official existence until now, and yet it all-too perfectly describes this song. It starts out with a heavily-synthed, echo-y horn sound reminiscent of the 80s, and whispered vocals add to the dreamscape. Like the title of the song suggests, this song is just epic and you can’t help but let it fill you with some imagined purpose. So being that it’s Friday, go out there and conquer your weekend!

BIRTHDAY TICKET GIVEAWAY!!

March 25, 2013 6 Comments

Hi there, Whuzzerface here,

LET ME START OFF WITH THE BIG STUFF

April is “BIRTHDAY PARTY MONTH” at Raging Contagion!!

April 1st is Raging Contagions 1st birthday (it is but a wee babe yet) and April 25th is MY birthday (not at all as young as this blog). I love to live it up for my birthday especially since there are always really good concerts in town that month. As such, we thought and pondered about the best way to celebrate. I consulted local concert calendars and came up with a grand idea. Since I personally plan on attending about 6 concerts in the month (3 within my birth week) we are going to do a TICKET GIVEAWAY so you can come and party with me. How fun will that be!

Raging has told me that it would love some more followers for it’s birthday gift so here’s how we’re going to run this contest. Each of these gets you one entry to the giveaway:

  1. LIKE us on Facebook   or follow us on here (it’s super easy, just click “+Follow” and it will email you new posts).
  2. Share this post on Facebook, or any post from us
  3. For every friend you get to follow us (in either of the forms) you get an additional entry (Just let us know via email or Facebook which of your friends followed so we can verify). Maybe even bribe them with the line “Hey, if you follow it and I win the drawing, I’m gonna take you with me to the concert!”
  4. Do the math. You + 2 friends”likes” = 3 entries for you, 1 for each o’ dem. Everyone gets a chance!

The prize is a pair of tickets to one of these concerts (three of these groups we’ve already featured on here at least once!):

All concerts are held at the impeccable Crescent Ballroom 308 N. 2nd Ave. Phoenix, AZ. The winner will be responsible for their own transportation to the venue. Ticket pick up will be arranged directly with the winner either before the event or night of (if you want to go to dinner before, you’re paying for yourself, but I’d be game for noshing with you!).
The deadline is April 15th and a winner will be randomly selected from the entries out of a hat by a blind monkey. Ok, maybe not a blind monkey, they’re hard to find and the insurance…., but we’ll be sure to blindfold cheerlubber and have her draw a name out of my Indiana Jones hat. That’s close enough to a monkey ;-)

I am super excited for this especially because I love having concert buddies. There are few things as fun as listening to a live band and dancing the night away.

So get on it, you know you wanna come party!!

Miami Horror – I Look To You ft. Kimbra

March 21, 2013 1 Comment

I came across this song a while ago but didn’t remember it until a recent trip to Sephora, where it was playing in the store. This electronic band from Australia offers a song with a touch of retro disco sound with its horns and funky, moving bass line, combined with Kimbra’s soft, whisper-y vocals for a surreal effect. A quick glance at some of their other songs reveals they’re a fan of this funk sound, and I can’t say I disapprove. Take a “look” at this mesmerizing song!

Dragonette – Right Woman

March 13, 2013 1 Comment

International Woman’s Day may have been last week but that doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate it! And so I present to you “Right Woman” by Dragonette. We are absolutely smitten by this Canadian band. You may recognize the voice of their singer Martina who appeared in collabs with French producer Martin Solveig for “Boys & Girls” and “Hello.” Dragonette first released an album in 2007, but their second album released in 2009, “Fixin’ To Thrill,” was golden. I rarely enjoy a whole album so much but there’s not a single bad or boring song on that one. They recently released a new album entitled “Body Parts” that is just as good. While this song does appear on that album, it was first released a year ago on a compilation album for fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg in honor of International Woman’s Day. Honestly, I didn’t know this “holiday” existed until recently, but we don’t really need one day set aside to remember how amazing women are!

Lee Hi – 1, 2, 3, 4

January 10, 2013

I’ve been telling Whuzzerface I would post something for about the past week now. Whoops. So, picking something rather randomly, I give you Lee Hi. This 16-year-old singer just debuted in South Korea under one of the biggest entertainment companies there with this song. Her acting in the music video is absolutely awful; she’s stiff and boring. You can still enjoy the dancers and the sets though.

Like this! See that sign up at the top left? Lollerskates.

BUT that’s not what really matters anyway. This is a fun, laid-back, retro song that has a tendency to get stuck in your head with its simple chorus of “1 and 2 and 3 aaand 4, ooh~” Don’t be frightened that the song is in Korean. If it bothers you that much, this song is popular enough to find translated lyrics of it somewhere online, if knowing the meaning of the lyrics will determine whether you like the song or not (because it does for some, silly enough as it is). Unfortunately, it is only available to buy through iTunes at this time. If you like to avoid iTunes and their steep prices as much as I do, you know who to call.

Shim Kyu Sun – Redribbon Foxes (A Fine Frenzy cover)

December 19, 2012

Got a lil’ Christmas song for ya’ll! Now don’t freak out just yet because it’s a foreign name. To be honest I don’t know much about Shim Kyu Sun, except that she’s Korean and I think she mainly sings ballad songs. But her label did a Christmas cover album a few years ago and I stumbled upon her cover of a song by A Fine Frenzy and fell in love. I heard it from Shim Kyu Sun first and then listened to the original version. Now, Shim Kyu Sun’s version obviously has some slight pronunciation errors, but honestly I like how she sings it better (also, this version has really neat visuals). If you’d like to hear the lyrics more clearly, however, you can check out the original here. Either way you like to listen to it, it’s a beautiful little song, and–for someone who usually gives more credit to the music than the lyrics–I think the lyrics are beautiful too (you can read them here). Hope you remember what really matters as Christmas approaches this year!

Late Night Alumni – Eros

December 6, 2012

Here’s something a little different. Late Night Alumni is a house group from Salt Lake City formed in 2004, and is composed of 4 members; perhaps one of the most well-known is Ryan Raddon, aka big-time DJ and producer Kaskade. Eros is from their first album “Empty Streets” released in 2005. The soft vocals give the song a very ethereal feel, which suits the title Eros. I think the lyrics are interesting. For those who don’t know, Eros was the Greek god of love, especially lust. You might recognize him by his name in Roman mythology: Cupid. He would make people fall in love with either of his two arrows (for two different types of love). Once you understand that, you may be able to determine the meaning of the rest of the lyrics on your own. I think it’s basically talking about a fading love, one that was built on the “idol Eros,” i.e. a superficial love. Now that Eros is gone (the initial attraction), the love is falling apart because they didn’t build it on anything that really matters. Some food for thought. Anyway, enough of talk about lyrics! Listen and enjoy!

Jupiter One – Simple Stones

November 30, 2012

Today I present you with a mellow, head-bobbing tune with some echo-y vocals. Jupiter One is an indie-rock band from Brooklyn formed in 2007, and they also toured with Regina Spektor once. This song was released on their second album “Sunshower” released in 2009, and is my favorite from the album. I think the greatest part about this song is the descending bass line (of course accompanied by claps–can’t go wrong with claps). Dat bass line, man. I love it. So you should too. Take a listen!!
