Chiiild – Eventually

January 30, 2023

Sounds similar to: Majid Jordan, Tame Impala, Toro Y Moi

Came across this song the other day. Even though the album has been out since 2021, it deserves postage.

Getting vibes to this song – *sniffs like a wine connoisseur* – it’s certainly feeling like solo road trip playlist necessity. In addition, that beat is akin to Tame Impala’s ” ‘Cause I’m a Man”.

GL – Runner

Sounds similar to: Toro Y Moi, Ronika, HAERTS

GL – the perfect soundtrack to your 80’s fantasies of driving down a dark road in a fast futuristic-looking car as if you were in a movie and on your way to confront your foe, your face a stony look of determination and a steely glare as you gaze into the horizon ahead. Ok, maybe that’s MY dream, but this is the car I’d drive, in case you were wondering and all…

Nary do any of their songs stray from the formula of epic electro pop glowing synth dance realm, and I’m totally ok with that. This Melbourne duo has several other Dr. Whuzzerface approved tracks too that you should enjoy. I would recommend starting with “What Happened To Us” as an appetizer.

Christine and The Queens – Saint Claude

May 8, 2015

And we back!

Christine & The Queens are going to start hitting the music scene like a tidal wave soon, so get your fill now before their incredible music gets overplayed.

I imagine that she embodies Michael Jackson, if he was a french and a woman that is. This song certainly hooked me withing just the first few seconds. Enjoy!

Thumpers – Unkinder (A Tougher Love)

Hi there, Whuzzerface here,

HAPPY LA-DI-DA NEW YEAR!!

What better way to start the year afresh than with a killer tune that you absolutely have no idea what the lyrics are going for but you still can’t get the beat or melody out of your head. If that’s how you like it, then you are in luck my friend because this song is the doozie to get your head bobbing in true pigeon-esque fashion.

“Unkinder” is mostly focused on the amped up drums,  group singing, delayed buzzes, and bounteous “oooooooo’s” and “ah’s (you should check out their unplugged version of it). Actually, listening to this song really makes me ache for drum set…but that’s a sad story for another time. The heavy drums really seem to play on the UK bands name though, eh? I can only imagine that the topic of the song revolves around the obstacles a relationship goes through to build “A Tougher Love”.  But seriously, let me know what you think about this? I’m totally digging on it.

Cheers!

Flash/Lights – Scarves

Hi there, Whuzzerface here,

I’m going to continue with the winter-themed songs with todays treat. With all this onslaught of cold weather most of the US has been having, I figured some of you might want a bit of a break so here, try on this “scarf”, it’ll warm you up with the suggestion “we should get away, the sand and the sun to press against my face”. I can feel the balmy breezes now (don’t get me wrong, I am LOVING this cold weather! I may live in one of the warmest places in the world, but I do have quite a collection of cold weather outwear attire. *shrug*). Seeing as how this group hails from Denver though, I may understand why they may express this sentiment.

Now, if I were to make up a song right now with the music equipment just sitting at the foot of my bed, the result would sound almost exactly like this song, leading me to wonder why I am NOT making up tunes right now. Beside that point, I am digging the almost Beach Boy tone he takes on in the chorus, it really completes the escapism feel.

Enjoy and HAPPY FRIDAY!

Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood

December 10, 2013

Sounds similar to: Blur, Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley

Hi there, Whuzzerface here,

It’s that time of year that I dub the “Downhill Holidays”. You see, after Halloween, the holidays just start rolling in faster and faster and before you know it you’re spit out on the other side of the following year a few pounds heavier, house a lot messier, even emptier, and with nothing to celebrate until Valentines Day (and what a bright spot of the year that is for some…). So forgive me if I want to go back to something a little less “Jingle Bells” and a little more “Slay Bells”. ‘Das right, I’m gonna mix up Christmas with Halloween in a very non Tim Burton way with this long forgotten gem.

I like to think of this as the Ghost of Apocalyptic Future’s song. Why the Gorillaz, partially made up of one of my high school favorite band Blur, chose to name it “Clint Eastwood”? I really don’t know nor do I care to look it up right now. Let’s just leave it up to imagination. Listening to this song, however, brings back fond memories. Have you ever been swing dancing before? I used to go at least once a week and had to get slipped in the back entrances to dance clubs because I was way under age but they needed girls who knew how to couples dance. Almost every dance I went to at one particular place, the DJ would make this the last song of the night. While it may seem slow for pop dancing, trying to do the Lindy Hop to this, you have to go VERY FAST. It was always a fun way to end the night. Here’s hoping this makes your Holiday Blues bearable! Enjoy!!

Familjen – Det Snurrar I Min Skalle

Hi there, Whuzzerface here,

My laptop lives again!!!!  Really, the biggest reason I haven’t posted as frequently in the past few months is because my dearest love in the world, Lappy, has been on the injured (and by injured, I mean the hard drive locked up to the point the even my #1 bro-in-law couldn’t crack it! When I mess up something, there are no half measures here) list so I’ve had to grab a few minutes on sympathetic sisters computers to get even email time. ‘Das all about to change!

Let’s kick off the revival with some non-English language pop music all the way from Sweden, and you know how much I love my Swedish pop!

In case you can’t see the similarity to English though, the name “Familjen” translates to “The Family” but is really just one man with many tastes. This particular song has been with me for several years floating around my “sure to get me some pep and energy” playlist. I have to add that yes, this is the OFFICIAL music video AND it won a Swedish Grammy for Best Music Video back in 2007. “Det Snurrar I Min Skalle” means “My Head Is Spinning” and one of my favorite translated lines is “I lit a fire for you and now the whole forest is burning!” (read more here)

Enjoy!

Starsystem – Our Love

October 10, 2013

Sounds Similar To: Rooney, MGMT, Gorillaz

Hi there, Whuzzerface here,

This is a bit of a Throwback Thursday! Rising from the ashes of the former surfer Cali rock band Rooney comes the sure-to-be shooting comet STARSYSTEM. That’s right folks, the delectable Robert Schwartzman is up to new toe-tapping tunes. This particular song from their EP “Pleasure District”, which was just released this week, is going to be the money maker.  Comin’ at you with 90’s rap-esque beats and keyboards, joined with disco funk bass and back-up vocals is a songs that I can picture myself skate-dancing to. Hello flashbacks to SKATELAND!!

Oh Land – Pyromaniac

September 26, 2013

Sounds Similar To: Sia, Charli XCX, Dragonette

Whuzzerface here, WISHING I WERE OH LAND!!

Seriously, the Danish singer Oh Land is so pretty and adorable, it’s not fair. Her mother is an opera singer, her father an organist, and she was in the Royal Dutch Ballet until a spinal fracture ended that career and made her rediscover her true calling.  Obviously, she can’t help winning a genetic lottery with being beautiful, graceful and creative so I don’t hate her for it. But seriously though, I want her hair color(s).

This song is bound to be one of her biggest tracks from her new album “Wishbone”, which just came out two days ago, the same time that she kicked off her US tour for the next month. This poppy song retells of a volatile relationship, the girl calling herself a “pyromaniac” and the guy being her “perfect match and spark”.

If you find yourself liking this song, you’ll probably also appreciate her older songs like “Son of A Gun” or “White Nights” (there are many good remixes too).

ENJOY!

HAIM – The Wire

Hi there, Whuzzerface here,

These girls kick butt! Seriously, this tight-knit crew of sisters hailing from Los Angeles are one of the strong, seriously musical and talented all-female bands that I would love to see more of.  Their tight 3 part harmony, throaty low alto voices and the accented “HUH!” makes this song great “Girl Power!” type song, and I am thinking that this will be exactly what they need propel them into the spotlight they so rightly deserve especially since they all take turns on solo verses. I’m sure this will get stuck in your head because after just hearing it twice, it’s echoing around in mine. You’re welcome. The video is also very funny. Quiz time: in which movie does the first bachelor act as the nerdy step-brother of a wanna be stunt man??
