Woodkid – Iron

May 18, 2012

This song is rated: 3 Pills – heavy prescription; may induce side effects

O hay look, it’s cheerlubber.

I apologize for not getting around to a Sunday classical post this past week (for those .001% of you who actually care) but things just got a little busy. They’ll be even busier this next week but I’ll try to be better about posting anyway. Today I shall feature something a little different. What’s that? Threeee pills?!  :O  This is our first 3-pill song so I hope you guys are prepared (3 pills is the highest, jsyk). Y’know, thinking about it though, I don’t know if this song is that extreme. It’s different, definitely different, but we’ll play it safe because we’re not exactly sure how sensitive you guys are. Give this a listen and let us know–not only what you think of the song–but if it’s rightfully classed as a 3-pill-er or if it can safely be a 2-pill. We’d like to know how far we can push you guys. Bet you’re excited about that. :D

What we have here today is the song Iron by Woodkid, otherwise known as Yoann Lemoine, the name by which he is credited as the director of music videos like Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, Taylor Swift’s Back to December, Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die. and Mystery Jets’ Dreaming of Another World. He’s a multi-talented guy that decided to try his hand at songwriting as well, releasing his first EP last year. He’s got plans to release a full album later this year and I can’t wait to hear what he’ll bring to the table.

I love Iron because it’s so different. There’s no guitars, no booming bass, no synths. What it does have is tribal war drums, haunting organ, frantic flutes, and blaring horns. To that, Woodkid adds his low, smooth voice, complete with French accent. Some of the words may be a bit hard to understand but I think it adds to the exotic-ness of it all. I’m not really sure how to label a piece like this, but I sure wish I could because I want more of it. It sounds like it was written for a movie, which of course gets me excited, being a classical music and movie score buff. Woodkid, indubitably (always wanted to use that word), directs the music video and it’s just as cool. It’s pretty simple, really, but I think it fits perfectly with the song’s raw, gothic feel. As a bonus, it features supermodel Agyness Deyn who looks especially freaking awesome. I love how everyone presents themselves and then charges off to war, all the while looking like they’re aware they’re coming to their inevitable ends. The music video is rife with symbolism, I’m sure, but I’ve never been a good analyzer (just take a look at all my literary analysis papers); knowing that it’s there, however, intrigues me, and perhaps that’s why I have no problem watching this music video a couple times over. It speaks to my subconscious, we’ll say. Hah.

Iron was also notably featured as the music for the trailer of the video game Assassin’s Creed Revelations (gotta throw in any reference I can get to a video game :D ). The trailer is equally as awesome as the music video. In fact, I’d probably call it one of the best video game trailers of all time, and also easily trumps some movie trailers I’ve seen. Soooo that means ya’ll should go watch it. Rait nao. I would post it here, but two videos in one post is probably a bit too much. However, feel ever so free to follow the link to it here.

Before I can ramble any longer, I better go ahead and post the video, which is what you all came here for anyway. While I know I said I struggled with classifying this song earlier, there is one word that I think adequately describes it: epic.

Family Force 5 – Dance Or Die

May 1, 2012

This song is rated: 1 Pill – entry-level for music novices

Hi everyone, Dr. Whuzzerface here!

Bet you thought I’d fallen off of the face of the Earth, huh? Not a chance, suckas! Birthday celebrations last week were a little hectic (and extended well beyond the bday, hehe) but I’m back and rearing to go.

Raging Contagion has been up now for 30 days so I feel that, like my birthday, it’s time to celebrate with something extra special. I think we’re all comfortable enough with each other now to share some of our more treasured tunes. As such, I have the greatest pleasure in introducing to you Family Force 5’s “Dance Or Die”. The video below is, as I like to describe it, the love child of the movies Tron and Captain EO (if you don’t know Captain EO, it’s a vital piece of Michael Jackson history – you MUST watch it in order for your life to be complete). Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhh, chew on that for a bit.

A little about FF5: They are 5 fellas from down south Atlanta, Georgia, only 3 of them are actually family/bros (1 set of twins & brother Solomon, a.k.a SoulGlowActivator). They describe their music as “Christian Crunk Rock”, and it’s the truth too. 95% of all of their songs are extremely danceable which is why I think “Dance Or Die” is a good start to your soon-to-be FF5 fascination. CAUTION: Do not watch the following video unless you have a certified sense of humor. FF5 loves to do a lot of silly moves, jokes, and just generally have good fun together and they make sure to put a huge dose of that into every one of their songs and videos. I’ve seen them perform live and it is always a good time!  That being said, you have to ask yourself, when it comes to this song, are you gonna dance…..or DIE????

Santigold – Disparate Youth

April 24, 2012 1 Comment

This song is rated: 2 Pills – intermediate musicologist level

Hi there, Dr. Whuzzerface here,

There’s a distinct possibility that you may have never heard of Santigold. If that is the case the fastest way to describe her is as America’s version of M.I.A. (if you don’t know who that is, let me know, you might need to come in for some one-on-one clinical help). Santigolds’ new album hits shelves on May 1st and this song is a delicious taste of what’s in store. “Disparate Youth” has a rock-reggae feel to it with a accents of super-fast guitar hits that are reminiscent of a U2 song.  My favorite lyric line is “Oh we said our dreams will carry us, and if they don’t fly we will run”.

The video below channels “Lord Of the Flies” in the Bahamas/Caribbean (sorry, I can’t tell the difference) with the chorus of boys joining in add the end of the song. I think this chill song is a good omen of an awesome album to come. Enjoy!

A-Trak, Kimbra & Mark Foster – Warrior

This song is rated: 2 Pills – intermediate musicologist level

Happy Friday everyone, Dr. Whuzzerface here!

This song was just released yesterday so it is hot off the press and FREE for you to enjoy. Did I say free? Oh yeah! Converse commissioned 3 epic artists to do a collaboration and the result can be summed up in 3 amazing words: synthesizers, luchadors, & Kimbra. I’m a such a sucker for synthesizers, they just get my digital soul moving. What do I mean by luchadors? Do I mean costumed Mexican fighters? I do, and that is exactly what the music video (down below) is focused on. It even starts getting to a point where the fighting starts to look like it came straight from the movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, which I adore. And Kimbra is such a doll, I think she deserves special mention.

Let’s not forget the other 2 fellas who helped on this. A-Trak is one of my favorite remixers around. I’m 95% sure that all the synth work and basic song structure of this tune is result of his genius. He can take the lamest of top 40’s songs and make it listenable to my sensitive ears. As for Mark Foster, you might know him better as the frontman for a group called Foster The People who hit it big last year with the song “Pumped Up Kicks”.

If you love the song, I was serious when I said it was free. Free things on Good Friday = an awesome weekend! All you have to do is follow this link to the Converse page, click “Download Track” and it will be yours to love and cherish without any cost.

Enjoy the video! (And don’t forget to subscribe or comment! I’d love to get your feedback.)

Gotye – Learnalilgivinanlovin

April 2, 2012 2 Comments

This song is rated: 1 Pill – entry level music for novices

Hi there, Dr. Whuzzerface here!

I hope you all got a hint that yesterdays BabyMetal post was somewhat of an April Fools joke, right? (Although I must confess, when they switch over to the rap part, they were totally adorable!) That being said, I would like to introduce to you the first OFFICIAL music post of Raging Contagion. I was gretting all weekend about what would be the best foot to start off on and was so overwhelmed I finally just hit “Random” on my favorites playlist and what came up was so perfect, I can only attribute it to divine inspiration.

With a song like this in your arsenal, however, you can conquer AN-Y-THING (including those awful Mondays we just had to face)! The artist Gotye (pronounced “Go-tee-ayh”) has been a hot item recently from his oh-so-brilliant song “Somebody That I Used To Know” which was covered by, and succinctly went YouTube viral, Walk Off The Earth. “Learnalilgivinanlovin” from the album Like Drawing Blood is totally opposite of “Somebody”.

The song starts off with a motown drum intro combined with harmonized “oohs/aahs” (I can just imagine the backup dancers for this!), layering in tambourines, horns and then gets into the good stuff. This song is about learning how to give, how to love, and how to live. Don’t wait to play this and make sure to turn it up, it will get you moving!

BABYMETAL – いいね!

April 1, 2012 1 Comment

Dr. cheerlubber here.

For our very first music post here at Raging Contagion, we wanted to give you a little taste of what you can expect from us. It might be a bit of a hard pill to swallow the first go-around but we’re sure you’ll come to love it as we have after a few good listens.

Coming to us from the Land of the Rising Sun is a special little group unlike any other. Known as BABYMETAL,  this group was formed in 2010 on the theme of “Kawaii Metal” (according to their company, this is a mix of Japanese Pop Idol music and Heavy Metal; “Kawaii” in Japanese means “cute”). Comprised of members SU-METAL (13), MOAMETAL (12), and YUIMETAL (12), these three youngsters are certainly a force to be reckoned with, as you battle with conflicting emotions of adoration and terror as you watch.

This particular song 「いいね!」 (pronounced “ee-nay,” as you can hear in the chorus), translates into something along the lines of “Good, yeah?” although it’s also titled “line!” for whatever reason.

I have to say my favorite bit is from 1:30-2:00 because they’re just so stinkin’ adorable. Because I wanted to challenge myself, after much trial and tribulation, I was able to translate most of the rap, which goes something like this:

“Makes me toss my head, makes me take off my shades,
Makes me turn my head, makes me take off my shades,
Makes me toss my head, makes me take off my shades,
Makes me immediately drop my bulging, jam-packed backpack”

And then of course before the song descends back into screamo, the girls cutely ask, “Are you ready to mosh?”

Well if you truly are ready to join the so-called “mosh pit of chaos” and want to help support these three girls achieve world domination with smiles and screams, you can check out their pages here:
